Dear new friends:

In the interest of getting to know each other, I’d like to tell you a bit about myself and my background. Soon you can return the favor for me. I’d love to hear your stories.

I am sixty-six years old, retired, happily married to Betty, father of two, stepfather of two, and grandfather to four (all under the age of eleven). I am a dog lover and a cat-friendly person. I have a large sense of humor! I laugh every day!

I have been a professional educator, and eventually a school administrator, for thirty years. I am now retired.

I am a self-taught woodworker, sound system technician, electrician, plumber, automobile mechanic, and welder (some of these at the shade-tree level of expertise). You are more likely to find me with a tape measure or saw in my dirty hands than to find me in a dress shirt and tie.

I am a voracious reader, occasional writer, life-long student and a part-time pastor (since 1974).

I like working with people, but I need my alone-time too. I love my computer, my iPad and my cell phone!

I loved Star Trek, Babylon Five, Deep Space Nine, and most other classic Sci-Fi television shows. I love watching “Survivor”! My favorite movies are “Last of the Mohicans” with Daniel Day-Lewis, and anything “Star Wars”. My favorite authors are James Lee Burke, Louis L’Amour, and Tony Hillerman.

Most importantly, I am a sinner, forgiven by the grace of God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and I don’t have all the answers. I am, however, still searching for the answers almost every day. I still have an open mind. God is not finished with me yet!

I presently serve in several roles in the United Methodist Church:

  • I am a Graduate of The Course Of Study, Candler School of Theology, at Emory University in Atlanta.

  • I am a Licensed Local Pastor, serving part-time.

  • I am the newly-appointed pastor of the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church, effective March 1, 2018.

  • I am the Athens-Elberton District Representative to the North Georgia Conference Executive Committee of Licensed Local Pastors and Associate Members. I serve as secretary to that committee.

  • I am a member of the Athens-Elberton District Committee on the District Superintendency. (this committee is roughly the same as the Staff-Parish Relations Committee in a church. I serve as secretary to that committee.

  • I have been an instructor in the District Lay Servant Training Program for several years. I have taught both the Basic Course and the Preaching course for beginning Lay Speakers in our district.

I tend to be pretty practical in my religious beliefs. I try to keep my feet on the ground and my goals realistic.

Please understand this much: I bring everything I have ever studied and everything I have ever learned to my role as pastor in the United Methodist Church. I use it all.

I offer all this to the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church to be used in whatever ways we discover I can be of service.

See you soon:
